Should we remove the tree this fall or next spring?
We have a 17 year old pagoda dogwood that we have been pruning infected branches off of for 6-7 years. It is to a point now where we want to replace it in the spring for a new one.
Would it be better to remove it this fall or wait and do it in the spring? If we do it in the spring dill there be a better chance of the golden canker surviving in the soil and infecting the tree? Or, even if we do it this fall will the canker survive over the winter in the soil.
And maybe we need to treat the soil with something regardless of when the tree is removed and replaced. If so, what is the best method of soil treatment?
Sorry- that was a lot of questions.

Expert Response
I cound not find a research based answer to the soil question. The following web pages do discuss fighting the disease when it occurs. Also the raised ground and blocks surrounding the tree are not a good idea. Plant your next tree a few feet away and at ground level. The roots of the previous tree will need time to biodegrade. Otherwise the rotting process will pull nutrition away from the roots of the replacement tree.
