Golden Canker- pagoda dogwood #783005

Asked March 02, 2022, 2:18 PM EST

I have a mature pagoda dogwood that I have been trimming golden canker off for the past 4-5 years but it's claim more of it this winter and I've decided to just replace the tree/shrub this spring. Beyond taking care in removing all infected branches and getting them safely hauled away, is there anything I should do to the soil to remediate any spores that may have fallen during the process? I plant to remove the root ball too. Any advice on best methods for this process is welcome. Thanks- Wes Chapman<personal data hidden>

Thank you for writing.
I cannot confirm your diagnosis without pictures.  Here is some general information for you.   https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/golden-canker-pagoda-dogwood

Here is information https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/golden-canker-cryptodiaporthe-canker/

This problem seems to be aggravated by heat and drought (certainly a feature of last year!) and it only affects pagoda dogwoods. http://hyg.ipm.illinois.edu/article.php?id=621  It is however very common in pagoda dogwoods so I think your plan to remove the plant, choose another kind of plant, and water it well should be sufficient.
I've sent pictures to you guys in past years and you have confirmed it's golden canker.

My question was that I want to replace it with another pagoda dogwood and what, if anything, should I do while removing it or after removal to the soil.  I don't think you answered that question but you did say "choose another kind of plant."  Should I interpret that to mean- do not replant a pagoda dogwood?

Thanks- Wes

Thank you for writing back.  Cryptodiaporthe corni is widely distributed in the soil.
The expression of disease primarily reflects the stressors on the plant. Last summer was terrible from the standpoint of stressing plants.  I cannot find any measure for eliminating the fungus nor do I find any advice to not plant a pagoda dogwood in the same area (as prudent as that sounds).
Your best approach might be a trickle irrigator and if the summer is as blazing hot as last summer, you could try UV garden cloth which I used to save many of my heat stressed plants.
Thank you.

This is the first time I've heard the connection between heat stress and golden canker.  I thought it was just an older plant disease.
I think we'll do another pagoda dogwood and make sure it stays watered.

Thanks again- Wes
