I have been hearing about a North American bird illness.  Articles are suggesting that people take their bird feeders down.  Are there any problems in Oakland County or Michigan?  Can I safely continue to feed birds and wildlife.  I'm cleaning feeders weekly during the summer.  If we remove the peanut feeders the squirrels will storm our house.

Powdry Mildew on Pumpkin plant - Grosse Pointe #766529

Good Afternoon, My pumpkin plants are starting to form powdery mildew on their leaves. I have removed several leaves already that were really bad, but the fungus just keeps coming back. Little pumpkins are starting form and I'm concerned I will lose all of them. Can you please provide the best natural remedy to keep this under control? I have a pollinator garden surrounding my vegetable garden and will need an all natural solution. Also, when is the best time to treat this and for how many days? What's eating at my Mugo pine shrub? #766352

A white sticky substance is attached to all branches of the shrub, a result, I'm pretty sure, of sloppy painters who used it as a place to pour rinse water, e.g. paint residue. The tips are shrunk; many have fallen off. The needles are thin, and the shrub isn't filling out with new growth. IA professional tree company apply a deep root fertilizer about a month ago, and I have been adding water, at their suggestion, for 20 minutes at a time on a slow drip twice a week. It's not recovering. What is the issue? Will it end with the winter freezes? What can I do to restore the shrub to health?

how to kill tall weeds in back yard that won't be harmful for the lawn I want to plant #765654

My new residence is almost finished. the back yard is a mass of tall weeds. They will be cut down tomorrow and the site will be leveled for future planting. Is there a spray I can use today that will keep the weeds from coming back, but not keep the lawn I want to plant from growing? THANK YOU

Red Maple fungus #764066

Our 20-year old red maple developed this black discoloration at the bottom of the trunk a few months ago. I had a few arborists come and look at the tree. I received varying opinions on the problem. One of the opinions thinks the problem is Phytophthora Canker disease with a recommendation to do 3 treatments of both the bark and soil to help suppress the problem. What is your opinion? I threw a pizza crust out for the squirrel which he did not eat. I was going to throw it away the next day and it was covered with ants. My question is If I was to move that pizza crust with the ants on it to my boulevard where there are few ants would they start a new nest or just die? Sun burn will kill our most common tree in Oregon after 3 years #763547

Driving from Corvallis to Sandy Oregon in July this year. I failed to be able to spot a single Doug Fir that was NOT sun burned. I have never seen this in my 40 years of adult life... Assuming these new record heat waves will reoccur again and again, each year as climate changes get's worse each year - how many years can a mature tree suffer this kind of stress before they are all dead? Hey there ever been systematic notes take to give us some form of data that we can extrapolate with?

We have a vacation property on Riverside drive AKA Raymond. I have noticed a large amount of thistles (not sure of the variety) in our area by the road. I have also noticed a few here and there on our own property. I grew up on a farm in a neighboring state and was trained to get rid of them as quickly as possible. However, I have heard that some varieties are beneficial to pollinators and birds. Should I go with my instinct to attack them with a spade or leave them be? Thanks, Matt Rinne

What is eating my Persian Yellow rose bush (rosa foetida persiana)? #762632

I bought this bush in 2019 from the Tree Farm Nursery and Garden Center in Longmont. At the time I planted it, it did not have many roses. Then in June of both 2020 and June of 2021 it bloomed copiously, but something got to it almost immediately. See before and after pictures. I thought I had narrowed it down to being Japanese beetles so in early June of 2021 and hung up a Japanese beetle trap. It did not do any good and there were no insects in the trap. I also sprayed the plant this past May with a Safer Insect Killing Soap - which contains bacillus thuringiensis. I maybe sprayed too late and also the bush is very dense and thorny so it is hard to reach everywhere. Can you tell me what might be going on? It is now putting out lots of green new branches and a few new flowers that seem unaffected by pests. We live in Firestone, Coloraco. renee
