November vs March/April for pruning #813271

I'm in Petoskey, zone 5a. When I read about pruning plants, it seems it is mostly advised to do in "late winter/early spring". In my area, is that much different than in November? It would be helpful for some plants to make them less bushy for accumulating winter snow if I pruned in November. Also, it seems to me, weather in March-April can be more variable. Thanks for your help, once again!

I attended University of Maryland Far East Extension in 1960/1961 in Seoul Korea and I would like to get a copy of my transcript if possible. i don't think anyone at UCMG has even heard of this extension. Are you the same extension and would you still have records that old?

Many sprouts and suckers all over yard from flowering crabapple tree that was cut down 2-3 years ago. #808629

I had the tree cut down 2-3 years ago leaving a stump about 2 ft high.  The stump has grown suckers and also new plants all over the yard.  What might happen if I let them (that are fairly close to the stump) just grow where they are?  Also there are some new ones quite a distance from the stump...too close to the house to let grow up. If not a good idea, what is the best way to stop all that growth?

Identifying and treating disease in tomatoes #802475

Is there any way to treat verticilium in soil? I first had it about three yers ago and identified it (I think) from the book Crockett"s Victory Garden. Until last year it seemed confined to one small area of the plot where I plant tomatoes--this year it seems to be taking all the plants that I planted. Can I control or get rid of it or might I just as well forget about that area? (I rent so the space that I have to plant things is limited to the flower beds beside my garage.)I should also say that I have only limited experience and Crockett to go by and could be wrong about everything I have said except that I know my tomatoes are dying like flies and this year seems extremely bad. Identify hog or possibly Hogg pecan #792422

At the home in Limestone County where I grew up is a large pecan tree, 3 times as tall and as widespread as the one-story, 3BE home. It was already a large tree, almost too big to climb, back in 1960.  It puts out pecans about as long as a quarter; looked at from the stem end are oval-shaped, not circular; not a paper shell, but still good eating. Dad called them "hog pecans"; or was he saying "Hogg pecans", named after Gov. James Hogg, who requested that a pecan and a walnut tree be planted at at his grave site, and that offspring of these trees be given out across Texas, to "Make Texas a land of trees" (story from J. Frank Dobie)?

Wall Oven from 1960's #778654

I have a wall oven in a ranch home built in 1960's. My Neighbor just informed me that hers has brick and or stone in the wall behind the oven. I am wanting to take this out completely if I remodel kitchen. I am having a foundation inspection next Monday and I plan to ask this question to them as well. I so pray that this can be removed as I want to open up the kitchen to living room.

Care For Wilted 60-62 Year Old Christmas Cactus #777506

I am looking for advise on care for our family Christmas Cactus that has been passed down in our family starting with a plant that was left on the farm by the previous owner in 1953. Starts were given to my Aunt in the early 1960's and stayed with her until her death in the in the early 2000's. The plant then went to my sister, then to me upon her death. The plant is in a 10" pot and has thrived, blooming every year until this spring when the leaves started to droop while still blooming. I am not sure what happened, if the issue was over watering? too much fertilizer? pests? other? I let the plant dry out over a couple of months and then started watering again without adding fertilizer to the water. The leaves are still droopy after several months and a small section seems to have revived marginally. The plant is still alive but clearly not healthy and happy. The cactus is about 2-1/2 ft in diameter and approximately 3ft long and is severely root bound in the pot. I have used Miracle Gro 20-20-20 commercial fertilizer for several years diluted to 1 tablespoon pre gallon of water. I am requesting advise on how to treat and care for the Christmas Cactus to give it the best chance for survival. What are your best recommendations for pest control, fertilizer, possible treatment for root rot or other possible problems? "How to" information and brand of products would be appreciated. Treatment will be indoors and needs to be safe for pets and people. Thank you. Diana Buell. <personal data hidden>

We have a healthy infestation of aphids on our nasturtiums. We understand that , to a point, this is good because the aphids will gather on these plants and not on our more desirable plants like our food crops. What is the risk the aphids will move to the plants where we don’t want them? Would it be advisable to thin or completely remove the nasturtiums , o does that just remove the trap crop and risk an invasion of th aphids onto our desires le plants. Thanks.

How far can Grounding Rods be from Energizer ( Charger)? ie,. can a insulated wire be buried to run 100 feet from Charger before connecting above ground to Grounding Rods?
