We have approximately 25 acres of hay and a local farmer is wanting to buy and harvest it. What would be a fair amount to charge him for the hay? What is the going rate per acre?

Fall 2011 transplanted 15 foot tall catalpa from neighbors yard to mine.
Spring 2012 - leaves and apparent success. No flowers.
Winter 2012/2013 - leaf drop, watered occaisionally (with other trees)
Spring 2013 - no leaves on existing branches. It appears to have buds- just no leaves. However, new leaves have sprouted in 3 or 4 locations (all below existing branches) from the bark. Two (2) very vibrant suckers from have sprouted  3-4 inches from the base of the trunk.




Should I trim the sprouts on the trunk?

Should I remove the suckers?
Is it possible the branches will still sprout? 


If not- how stable will the trunk branches be?  (like will they just rot and fall or get brittle and remain)

We cash rent our farm. This year, 2012, we are going to install new drainage tile that will cost $ 13,000.00. Since we are renting the farm, and not considered a trade or business, can you show how we should depreciate the $ 13,000.00 in 2012 and later years using MACRS. Do you know which place-in-service convention we should use?
I know we can use the 50% bonus in 2012 but I'm not too sure about using MACRS and which convention we should use. The work should be finished by the end of May and we have no other depreciation expenses to deal with.

Horrible horsetail #128993

Please help me!  Horsetail is taking over my yard.  Will sedgehammer work on it?  Will improving the soil work on it?  I am at a loss.  I don't want to move but it is everywhere!  I can't stop it!  We live at the lowest point in the neighborhood which allows water to run through our yard.  I'm desperate.

May of 2012, we planted 1/2 an acre of Mid-Atlantic pollinator mix (~33% little bluestem and native wildflowers). A lot of weeds are popping up. The owner of the farm uses best management practices, and the study revolves around healthy bee populations. Thus we're trying to find an ecofriendly course of action. Also, this is part of my thesis project so is somewhat time sensitive. I plan to visit the site this Friday, so I can take photos and get a better feel for what type of weeds are most prevalent. From what the farmer told me, they're mainly large 'undesirable' grasses. We will likely need to purchase and plant natives to speed up the establishment of the pollinator habitat. What do you recommend? Pulling weeds or spraying? If the latter, what would be safe (to the bees and desirable plants) yet effective? Thank you in advance for your advice :0) Lisa

2012 Impatiens Virus #128920

In June 2012, our impatiens just collapsed from what we think now was a virus going around. The bed is under a river birch tree and this year we plan to plant begonias, specifically batik and netja dark, which are small bushy plants, we think. The soil seems unusually dry and pale this year. My questions are several: is there a need to strip a couple of inches of soil and discard it? Should we have the soil sprayed by a lawn service to kill any remaining virus? What else might be recommended prior to planting the begonias, such as new topsoil, compost mixed in, etc. Thank you for the help with this issue. Dying trees all around Salina and Saline Co. #127162

I've questioned Chip Miller on this issue in the past but haven't gotten any direct answer. Does anyone know what's going on with all the dying trees? They are very pale (no, it's not because they're supposed to be or that it's Spring) and have been pale for years until they eventually don't foliate in the Spring and die. Our parks look terrible with probably 50% of them dying or already dead. The city cuts down live healthy trees and leaves the dead ones. The ones that are dying are many varieties with maybe the exception of Osage Orange and Hackberry. Please find out why we're losing our beautiful trees. No one plants new ones when they die.
