    I want to purchase USDA inspected cuts of meat in bulk - Conduct additional processing on the cuts of meat like brining, marinading, seasoning, tenderizing. Then, blister, vacuum seal or similar as legally required and sell the packaged cuts of meat retail. I intend to purchase the product fresh, do the secondary processing at (what will be) my approved facility and then freeze the product prior to retail sale. What licensing, training, inspection requirements are needed?

    Baywise or other Program? #889698

    A neighbor has this sign in their yard stating that they are Baywise and to ask you for details. (I called the number on the sign and it goes to. a nursing home company). I have also seen signs in other people’s yards stating that they are a “certified wildlife sanctuary”. I want to explore/learn more about this idea and doing what I need to get a similar sign in my yard. Can you help with any information? Thank you.

    Fungus and maple trees #889694

    Hi. We have two maple trees in our yard which in some years develop black spots on the leaves. One is a Crimson King Norway Maple and unfortunately, the other is also probably a Norway maple rather than a sugar maple. We read that to prevent the mold, we should remove leaves from the ground every fall as soon as possible. But recently we read that we should be mulching the leaves right away. Would mulching the leaves frequently work or is it bad to leave even mulched leaves on the ground? Thank you.

    My Yoshino Cherry Tree flowered nicely last Spring, but it also produced a covering of sawdust around the base of the tree. Presumably, borers at work. Please advise the best treatment and timing. Myron Rosen

    Dahlia and gall? #889687

    Hi, I have had very helpful information from this site before, and now I have a new question. I am on a Facebook page for Dahlia lovers and there is a lot of talk about gall. I have been growing dahlia's for several years without problem and now I think I am paranoid. I lifted my dahlia tubers and found some long white growths that could be roots, but I need to be sure. They are growing out of the bottom of the tuber cluster. Please see the photo. I would appreciate you letting me know if I should be concerned. I am in Estacada.

    Volunteer Chinese Elm Tree #889686

    I have a volunteer Chinese Elm that popped up this year when I had knee replacement surgery and was not able to get to it. It is 3 ft tall, so I know the roots go deeper than that. Can I wrap it in black plastic to kill it? I normally catch these earlier and while I can still pull them out, but must have missed this one last year.

    Mystery Roots in Yard #889680

    Good afternoon! I have encountered some mystery roots in my backyard. I've been sheet mulching and planting natives in my yards but noticed certain plants were not doing well despite being cared for. When I started digging around in the soil near the plants, I began finding endless roots that went on and on. The finer roots were so deeply enmeshed in the soil, I was able to roll up the top layer like sod. The natives I had planted seemed to be choked by the mystery roots. I would appreciate any help in identifying the roots as well as management/mitigation strategies. I have attached a few photos of pieces I pulled up. There are two Norway maples within twenty feet of the area, and I read that they can cause this issue.

    Canning Habanero Peppers #889679

    I am looking for information about canning habanero peppers.  I usually make (freeze or eat fresh) a sauce comprised of habanero & serrano or jalapeno peppers, onion, garlic, sugar, salt, dry powdered cayenne, and vinegar.  I understand that blending the sauce may render this unsafe. I'm wondering if I could safely pickle the habanero & serrrano / jalapeno peppers using the nchfp recipe for pickled bell peppers and then blend the sauce once I open the jar?  I'm also wondering - would it be safe to pickle the habanero and serrano / jalapeno peppers whole (with slits cut into the sides) using the pickled bell pepper recipe given their smaller size?  Any advice you're able to provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Where to plan lillies #889678

    I received four types of lily bulbs as a gift. I am curious the best side of my house to plant these on. My house faces toward the north, and the main landscaping is on the northeast side of the house. There may also be a couple options to plant on the west side of the house. The backyard is mostly at the bottom of a hill. What would the best side of the house be? I understand I need to get them planted very soon!
