hello -- my bushes are being 50% eaten by caterpillars -- i have a living sample - how do i identify the insect?

I was cleanning out the kiddie pool my dogs use & while doing so, I found this bug in thr pool & was concerned it was a tick. But every search image generator label it as a water beetle that are not in Oregon. I could be wrong but figured I'd contact someone someone more educated about insects than me. I still have it in a closed container, but I killed it with rubbing alcohol. I won't provide my whole address as stated above, but I'm located outside of city limits of Sweet Home.

Hi, I recently got a new rose (grafted) and after I planted it (sometime in March) I was letting it grow for a while without paying much attention to it. I recently realized that the two largest new canes that have started to grow are crossing over each other quite a bit in the center of the plant (they kind of bumped into each other and are now almost growing vertically parallel to each other but much too closely as their foliage is overlapping). I had to treat the rose for dieback disease, so those two are now the main two canes on the rose actively growing, and one is already producing flower buds. I was wondering when would be a good time to prune the branches so that airflow and sunlight are increased in the center of the plant. Would it be imperative to prune it now (during the next dry spell) before it gets too late in the season, or would pruning it after it's first set of spring blooms be a better time, or even in the fall after it's been given more time to grow? As this rose is already suffering from dieback I want to decrease disease possibility as much as possible (I'm honestly surprised these two canes haven't become infected due to the crossing, the outward facing canes fared the worst), and I know that crossing canes can lead to higher probability of disease due to the decreased airflow, light and possibility of the canes becoming scratched, so I'm looking for some guidance on this issue. Do you have any recommendation soil pH meters or test strips that I can purchase? I don't trust an inexpensive meter I purchased on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BR52P26). I did a test of this meter by wrapping the electrodes in paper towel soaked in orange juice and lemon juice, and the pH meter didn't read below 5.5. I think it should have read much lower, under 4. Hi! We are on the third year of our asparagus patch. We were super excited to be able to harvest. We got one really healthy early spear and now all the spears shrivel up and flop over. Is this crown rot? We did have a little asparagus beetle infestation on the fronds last summer. I tried to be diligent on trimming and removing infested fronds. Could that be the culprit? Thanks!
