Location: Anywhere you can get access to some kind of forest that is safe and easy to access. You may want to recruit a friend for the data collection, if possible. Suitable sites must have trees, such as a public park, public recreation area or your backyard.
Find a location that is easy and safe to access with trees (such as a public park, or public forest). Make sure that your site has a minimum of 3 tree species. If possible, go with a friend as it is easier and safer depending on how remote the location.
Choose a location with trees and measure and mark with flagging a 20 x 20 m plot using the compass to establish the plot in a N, S, E, W direction. Then, using your measuring tape or string and compass, establish a grid of 10 x 10 m subplots within the 20 x 20m plot. Label each corner of the 10 x 10 m subplots with its coordinates.
