We have never noticed this before but this year all of our pine trees have these little pieces under them. First we thought maybe the deer were chewing them off but now we're thinking not any ideas?

I am unable to care for plants in the ground and would like to replant my perennials in containers. How should these be planted and cared for in containers and how to care for them over the winter?

We have a purple leaf plum tree with pink blossoms in our front yard that is 15-20 years old and because it was planted so it is shaded by the house it leans toward the street. It also was badly damaged by frost several years ago. My wife wants it gone. I’ve made a deal with her that I will cut it down but only if I can replace it with a plum or cherry tree in the back yard. I would like to find a similar looking tree that has good fruit and is hardy enough for Otsego south of Elk River. Can you recommend anything? In the front yard we want to put a red maple to replace the plum tree and an ash that we have been told will probably be mandated to be removed by the DNR sometime soon. Again, do you have a recommendation?

Wondering what you would recommend for a systemic product to use to control Asian beetles on linden trees? I just purchased Bonide's annual tree and shrub insect control but while reading the directions it says not to use on linden trees.

Hi, We have fescue grass and live in the Portland area. We need to spot seed areas where there are holes. The front and backyard are shady Nov through Feb. Which type of fescue would you recommend? How do I eradicate or control lesser Celadine? It has taken over my backyard and I know it is a pretty pernicious invasive.

When you first look, my rosemary looks great. It's full. It's big. Its flowering (see attached). But when trimming something near it today I noticed that there were brown and orange spots on several leaves. I looked all over, even the undersides of leaves and didn't see any evidence of bugs. Is there something wrong with it? Or maybe just winter burn? If there is something wrong, what is it and what do I do about it? Thanks

On route 97 or general's highway in people's yards. It doesn't seem like it's the right color for Eastern redbud. Does Maryland have wild plums? 

An arborist has recommended a root collar excavation for a 30-year old spruce. I searched your database for any references and did not find any. Does this mean it is not a common or recommended treatment? It is expensive. I appreciate that removing any stem girdling roots could be beneficial. But, how has the tree lived this long if roots are so tangled? That said, the spruce could use any help to improve its health. It does have Cytospora canker spores, specifically diagnosed by the UMN Plant Disease Clinic, and the canker has been the primary cause of needle/limb loss. The disease clinic also found a very small amount of Rhizosphaera needle cast. Ideally, the tree could be healthy enough to fight off disease. Would investing in a root collar excavation be worth it. More importantly, would the excavation be too much of a risk? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.
