I have a young paw paw sapling, now about 3' tall, that I just received in Cary's fall tree giveaway. It's currently potted in a small pot, 9" tall by 9" diameter. The guidance I find online says they're best planted in spring, so I need some advice for how best to get this through the winter. I have some landscaping changes to make in my yard, so I'm not ready yet to put this tree in its 'forever home' in the ground.
I have an unheated sunroom on the north side of my house and an unheated garage. I'm seeing some advice online that paw paws can overwinter well in pots in an unheated, sheltered space like that. Will that suffice?
The other option I'm seeing online from a lot of gardeners (though mostly in zones colder than ours) is to transplant it to a larger pot and then bury that pot in a temporary hole in the ground and cover it with mulch to protect the roots. Is one method better for the tree than the other -- garage vs. in-ground pot? Or is there another method I should use to protect it through the winter?
Thanks!
