Invasive Holly #893616
Asked March 04, 2025, 4:14 PM EST
Hi, I'm told that invasive Holly can be eradicated by applying herbicide to the freshly cut stump. (https://solvepestproblems.oregonstate.edu/weeds/english-holly-invasive) Is there any non herbicide options that would work; e.g. salt, vinegar, etc? I was once told that boring a hole into the stump and packing it with salt would kill the roots & help the stump to rot. Any viable option would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Small seedlings or trees can be removed manually. This plant sprouts prolifically, so care should be taken to remove as much of the root system as possible. Other than physical removal, the only proven effective treatments require application of a systemic herbicide to the cut stump or by injection. Some arborists offer injection services, which can reduce the risk of using these herbicides.
Salt and vinegar will not kill English holly. Cutting a tree and leaving a stump without herbicide application will likely result in sprouting and dense regrowth.
