When to plant my bare root strawberries #892890

Asked February 20, 2025, 2:17 PM EST

I received an order of bare root evergreen strawberries to plant in my Greenstalk container. The shipment came earlier than I was expecting. Is it safe to plant them this weekend given the frosts we are still having?

Expert Response

We recommend potting them now, which will help to keep the roots moist (water them in after planting). Ideally, keep them in a protected location that's cool but not too far below freezing (not indoors where it's too warm). If you need to put them outside, try to insulate the pots or move them into a garage (if available) if temperatures dip below 20 degrees F. Otherwise, they'll probably be ok if the potted plants are put outside this weekend.
