Deer resistant Native plant database; children’s sensory garden database #892875

Asked February 20, 2025, 11:36 AM EST

I’m looking for a listing of recommended plants to be included in 3 planting areas in Hamburg township as part of a grant program. The Hamburg Garden Club has been asked to assist with the installation of these planting beds. One bed will be generalized plants, one will be a children’s sensory garden, and the 3rd will be along the Huron River access to be used as a canoe launch for the Freedom River veterans. This is more of a wetland type environment so plants that will thrive in wetter conditions are preferred. As there will be no water supply in the other 2 areas we are specifically looking for native plants which will require little maintenance. ADDITIONALLY, as a very small group, we are looking for volunteers to assist in the planting which will be done this fall or spring 2026. We are wondering if the Master Gardener Program or the horticulture school might be a resource for those that need to complete volunteer hours. Thank you!

Our Native Plants and Ecosystem Services is a great place to start when choosing plants.  You can filter by soil moisture, light, bloom period, etc.

https://www.canr.msu.edu/nativeplants/index then click on Plant Selection then Plant Search tool.

I'm reluctant to name specific plants because you will need to consider mature size, bloom time, and light requirements.  The website will help you narrow down your choices.

Native plant nurseries are also good sources of information.  Purchasing locally is preferred over mail order catalogs or the big box stores.

As for finding volunteers, the Extension Master Gardeners provide education, they do not plant gardens or maintain them.  Sometimes garden maintenance is part of the education, but it is not the purpose of the program.  You could consider posting flyers asking for volunteers at the library or recreation center. You could contact local landscape compaines and ask if they offer discounted rates for the type of project you are doing.  https://www.mnla.org/ You do not need to be a member.  Click on the box Homeowners Enter Here, then enter the zip code. A list of landscaping companies will appear.

I hope this helps, it sounds like a wonderful project!
