Halal meat #892866

Asked February 20, 2025, 9:21 AM EST

Are there any religious exemptions from the rules regarding the processing of livestock on a farm to be sold? Specifically Halal meat? I am a Realtor representing a client trying to buy property for this purpose, so we don't know which county he will buy in but either Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina or Erie Counties are most likely. Thank you from a Buckeye 1985 alumni!

Cuyahoga County Ohio

Expert Response

Cindy,

Ohio and federal law allows for licensed meat processing facilities to operate under religious exemptions. It is illegal for a farm owner to harvest any animal on their farm and then sell that carcass or meat product, regardless of religion or practice.  If wanting to slaughter under a religious exemption, your client would need to find a processing facility that offers that service or start their own inspected processing business.
