Hello!

I am sorry to hear about your tree!  From what I can see in the photo, it looks like your tree was damaged by a woodpecker looking for beetle larvae.  The level of damage suggests beetle infestation at a level that may mean your tree is not going to live much longer.  The types of bark beetles that infest trees low on the trunk (known as Ambrosia beetles) are usually a sign of the end of a tree's life.  The tree was likely attacked by other engraver beetles, weakening it to the point where it is now.

To try to prolong the life of the tree you could consider providing it with extra water if possible.  If you have other pine trees on the property, consider having them evaluated for signs of beetle attack and applying preventative insecticide treatments to any high-value trees that are as-yet unaffected.

This CSU fact sheet covers some general information on engraver beetles (among which Ambrosia beetles are grouped): https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/ips-beetles-5-558/

I hope this is helpful!

Cordially,

John
