Hello Shawn

The earliest maples to bloom are Silver maples followed by Red maples and Norway maples.

One way to track when trees will bloom, insects appear, etc. is to track accumulation of certain temperature ranges using a measurement called growing degree days(GDD).
I checked Enviroweather for Growing Degree Days(GDD) in East Lansing and on average GDD 44 (base 50) for Red Maples bloom time is around April 10-12 (see more below).

This site has a table showing the range of GDD that Silver maples bloom on average—at GDD base 50 It is GDD 7-45. https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/use_degree_days_and_plant_phenology_to_anticipate_timing_of_pest_problems_t

This means that when your area reaches 7 through 45 growing degree days you will see Silver maples blooming in your area.

Here is another table of averages for beginning and full bloom of trees- showing red maples begin around 44GDD.

You can use GDDTracker to monitor the GDD at the station nearest to you. Enter your zip code, or choose one of the Lansing area stations.

GDDTracker begins tracking growing degree days on February 15.

Here is the website. https://gddtracker.msu.edu/about

As you know, weather varies greatly year to year, so we must use averages to attempt to predict things like bloom time. These averages can be seen for past years using Enviroweather tools. Here is the 5 year average for East Lansing MSUHORT weather station-

https://enviroweather.msu.edu/weathermodels/degreedayhistorical

You can see the wide swings from spring to spring, year to year of the GDD, and so maples would have bloomed at different times each year, but on average are in bloom by April 12.

Next, you can monitor actual measurements, as shown in tools like GDDTracker to show us what is actually happening in the current year. You will be able to see the GDD get closer to what range is bloom time for the various maples( and red maples which is 44 GDD). Here is the GDDTracker home page. It will have no viewable data for 2025 posted on it until Feb. 15th.
