Wanting to plant a field #892401

Asked February 07, 2025, 7:55 AM EST

Hello, I have about a 1/2 arca plot that has been farm land. I would like to plant something in it that would grow annually. I don't mind if I have to bushhog at the end of the year. Any suggests would be appreciated. Thanks Heath

You have all sorts of options here depending on what outcome you want.  From the question I am making the assumption that your are looking for simple ground cover that is easy to maintain when you need to.  Simple straightforward approach would be to look for a tall fescue/orchard grass and clover mix...about 75%fescue/25% clover.  You are basically planting a hay field, just without the goal of harvesting any hay.  Considerations for greater success are to soil sample for pH and fertility amendments, but you can balance that against the effort and desired outcomes you are seeking.  Happy to chat more, call us at the Muskingum County Extension Office at<personal data hidden> if you wish.
