Organic fruit tree spraying #892398

Asked February 06, 2025, 10:50 PM EST

I wonder what you think about a tree spraying company's proposed sprays for our small mixed fruit orchard of 40 trees as to their being considered "organic"? I do not want to use any pesticides or fungicides and want the fruit to be considered “organically grown”. The proposed products are: Badge X2, Regalia CG, and TriTek. The company says this is a scab treatment. We have never used these products in the past 15 years and have lots of fruit, but about 1/4-1/3 of the apples contain a bug/worm, and there some browning of a small number of leaves on our pear, apple and persimmon trees. What do you think of these sprays? Or could you recommend something else? Thank you!

Expert Response

Hello Susan,

All of their proposed products that you listed are OMRI certified and are made of biological, copper and natural oils that act as a fungicide in different ways. They are approved to be used in accordance with the label in organic production, these and similar products are widely used in organic production in our high disease pressure climate. Any alternatives are I would suggest (such as an organic certified copper-based fungicides) have the same components as what was recommended. To me their recommendation is solid and a good practice to reduce lost and so your orchard is not a source of disease for neighboring orchards.

Ultimately the decision is yours and the losses that you are experiencing is high, but for any grower, especially one cautious on what and how much of any product organic or conventional is applied, I recommend discussing forming an integrated pest management plan with the company.

Essentially you would be using a combination of good orchard management practices, when replanting or topworking with disease resistant cultivars and to minimize and only use what is necessary to keep the damage within your goals.

Thank you
