Expert Response

Hi, Tammy!

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension with your gardening question. Elderberry shrubs are a wonderful addition to a Michigan garden! There are many different types of elderberry shrubs, including common elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) - a native to our state, that will thrive in your area. The following MSU article has a list of several cultivars of mulberry that you may also want to consider: https://www.canr.msu.edu/uploads/resources/pdfs/unusual_fruit_plants_for_gardens_in_the_north_central_region_(e2747)_1.pdf

You may want to reach out to your local plant nurseries to see what cultivars of elderberry they will carry in the spring to help you decide what you will plant.

Soil -
Elderberry shrubs prefer moist, rich soil but will tolerate dry once established. Generally, they can grow in alkaline to acidic soils but thrive with pH between 5.5 and 6.5, but they are very tough plants and have been known to grow in alkaline soils as well. Check the label of any shrub that you buy for more information about pH levels needed. If you haven’t already done so in the last couple of years, a soil test is recommended before you plant.

Michigan State University Extension provides an easy-to-use soil test kit (homesoiltest.msu.edu) that can be purchased online from the MSU Extension Bookstore(https://shop.msu.edu/products/bulletin-e3154) or
from your local county MSU Extension office.

Growing Conditions –

Growing zones for elderberries range from USDA Zone 4 – 9. They prefer full sun or partial shade. For more information about growing elderberries in your garden can be found in this Smart Gardening page.
