Gardening with different water pressure . #891742

Asked January 20, 2025, 10:47 AM EST

I have a garden (residential) in my back yard with 4-5 raised beds. For the most part they are all different sizes. I have installed pvc in most gardens. The pvc is drilled at the same intervals with the same diameter holes ,spaced the same distances. When I attach the hose to the fittings for each garden the water needs to be turned on a different amount to achieve the desired application. This makes watering a time consuming event. Is there a way to regulate the different pressure requirements for different size gardens from a normal residential garden hose. Sorry for the lack of technical information.

Expert Response

HI Terry, thanks for the question.

Resolving the problem can be rather complex. Basically, what you have is similar to a drip system. Length of run(s), flow rate, pressure, pressure fluctuation, filtering, elevation variations, size of pipes, number/type of fittings, size of holes, spacing of holes et al can all play a part in how much water gets to a certain area. Be aware that different crops can also use water at a different rate.  A sketch or picture(s) would help to determine what is going on.  It would also be helpful to have some detail on the system components.

I look forward to your response.
