Please compare Japanese maple with crape myrtle for disease resistance. Ie, which will be least problematic on Hayden island close to the Columbia river??

Expert Response

Hi and thanks for your question regarding crape myrtles and Japanese maples. I've included fact sheets on both species' problems, but there are other factors to consider such as placement, correct planting, weather issues, which cultivar to choose and soil type. Since neither species is native to our area, I would check with a local nursery to see what they carry and recommend.

Both species have problematic issues so I really can't recommend one over the other.
