When to plant serviceberry tree #891695

Asked January 18, 2025, 9:55 AM EST

We’ll be removing a maple tree in our yard that is diseased. We want to replace it with a serviceberry tree so that we can attract more birds in our yard. After removing the maple, should we wait any amount of time before planting the serviceberry tree, or can we replace it the same season as the tree removal? When is the best time to plant serviceberry? Thank you.

Expert Response

Good choice on a the Serviceberry. They are one of my favorite small trees.

Be sure to get a tree variety such as Autumn Brilliance because Serviceberryies come in all sizes, from shrubs to trees.

You can plant your serviceberry right after the removal of your maple but don’t plant it in the exact same spot. There will still be a root ball below ground for a few years as it decomposes, even with stump grinding.

Plant your new tree at least 3 feet from the old stump if you can.
