What kind of spruce is this? #891608

Asked January 15, 2025, 12:23 PM EST

Hi there. I noticed this beautifully structured spruce tree while driving through southern Lorain county. It seemed to have a much more defined structure than any spruce i have ever seen. I do not believe it is a Norway spruce based on the upward trajectory of the branches. Could you help identify it please?

Lorain County Ohio

Expert Response

I think it's a Red Spruce (aka/West Virginia Spruce, Eastern Spruce and Yellow Spruce). I write "think" because I cannot see the bark or needles well enough to give a definitive answer. The description of a Red Spruce is the uplifted/upturned tips but nothing shows that it grows in Ohio (at least, naturally). Obviously, it could have been purchased elsewhere and brought to the location where it's planted.

I would be interested if you could get a closer picture of the bark or needles.
