Asked January 14, 2025, 7:21 PM EST

Hello! I have some tulip and daffodil bulbs that I didn't plant in the fall. Can I plant them in the spring? Thanks!

Hello Alexia,

Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, you do not have too many options. You can plant the bulbs in the soil outside as soon as the ground thaws and can be dug. The bulbs may not flower this spring, but they should bloom next spring as normal.

You can also pot them, chill them (do not allow to freeze) and then force them inside or outside as the weather warms. Bulbs that are forced generally do not do well when planted into the garden.

The bulbs will likely not remain viable if stored until fall to be planted into the garden.

Here is a good article that further explains your choices: https://www.purdue.edu/hla/sites/yardandgarden/didnt-get-your-bulbs-planted/

Hope this helps.
