Vegetables native to Minnesota? #891578

Asked January 14, 2025, 3:30 PM EST

Hello! I work for a small non-profit that is interested in starting its own seed library with only seed indigenous to Minnesota. I have been working my way through this list - https://extension.umn.edu/find-plants/vegetables - and comparing each vegetable to the plants in this database - https://webapps15.dnr.state.mn.us/restore_your_shore. So far, I haven't found (m)any vegetables in the native plants database. Are there vegetables that are native to our state, and, if so, what is the most efficient way for me to find a comprehensive list of these? Thank you!!

Hennepin County Minnesota

Thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.

I’m honestly not sure there is a list in one place of native vegetables.  In searching native vegetables to MN there are several separate listings that include things  like corn, wild rice, pumpkins and  root vegetables.  Different vegetables have been grown by different  groups such as Native Americans.  Settlers into the area brought with them different vegetables and fruits.

There are maps available from the MN historic society for verges.grown in different areas, but I believe you have to purchase them.

My suggestion would be to search for native vegetables for your area using a google search. Check out more than one site you should get a rounded answer.

The U of M extension has a list of vegetables that grow well in MN if you are interested in that list.

Also if you search MN wild vegetable list, you can find a list of wild vegetables that can be foraged.  Most of the indigenous seeds I find are for native wildflowers.

I’m really sorry I can’t suggest a specific list like you want.  You maybe could try calling your county extension office or try the extension office at the U of M. The phone number will be listed on the U of M extension website.
