Locating recommended fruit tree cultivars #891544
Asked January 13, 2025, 9:36 PM EST
Hello,
Thank you for the wonderful online resources. I have recently purchased a home in Calvert County (where I grew up) and hope to plant various fruit trees. I compiled a list based on the recommended cultivars on this site, and reached out to half a dozen local nurseries, but none of them carry any of the tree types I selected. Do you know of an orchard or nursery that sells any of the following?
Cherry: Black gold or Hedelfingen
Asian Plum: Methley
Apple: Redfree or Galarina
Persimmon: Gwang Yang (with american persimmon root stock)
Pawpaw: Pawpaw
The pawpaw i have found a few sources, but none of the others are carried by the four i have heard back from and im beginning to worry.
Thank you again for your efforts.
Best wishes,
-Isaac

Hello Isaac,
Unfortunately Extension doesn't collect information on which businesses stock any particular plant varieties (nor do we make company/supplier recommendations), so we don't have a list of sources to share. If local brick-and-mortar stores don't stock certain varieties, they probably can be sourced online. There are some mail-order fruit tree nurseries in the mid-Atlantic (such as Pennsylvania and Virginia) that likely have at least some of the suggested cultivars any given year.
As interest in growing native plants rises, pawpaw is fortunately becoming more widely available. That said, most nurseries stocking pawpaw carry the straight species (seed-grown, usually), and cultivars might be harder to source since they require grafting, a propagation process that takes nurseries more experience, time, and expense to produce. Here too, though, there are mail-order nurseries online that tend to supply pawpaw cultivars, though some years the inventory might be limited due to the slower growth rate of this species.
