Expert Response

Hello, Karen!

Thank you for using Michigan State University Extension with your question about locating deer resistant trees. A great resource to find local nurseries that may carry the trees that you are looking for is Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association, located at this link:

https://www.mnla.org/

By using the “homeowners” button on this site, you will be able to enter your zip code and find a great number of local nursery resources.

You may already know that no plant or tree is absolutely deer-proof. When food becomes scarce, deer will feast on anything - even the plants that are not necessarily attractive to them! Included below is a link for an article the contains a table of plants/trees organized by their attractiveness to deer. You may want to look at the list to decide what kinds of trees you would like to use on your property and then reach out to the nurseries to see where you can find your choices.

Other considerations to limit deer damage, can be found in this great MSU Smart Gardening article.
