Expert Response

Hi Linda,

thank you for contacting us at the UNH Extension Yard and Garden Infoline.

This is a great question, and one that is commonly asked! It has been said that there isn't a true squirrel "proof" bird feeder out there, but some that are squirrel-resistant, as squirrels can be quite persistent once they discover a free source of food.

Below are some verified resources that offer more information on some proven methods to deter squirrels, and some feeder options recommended by The Audubon:

Some top tips are to mount your feeder on a pole at least 10 feet away from trees or other climbing points, and install a baffle barrier either below or above the feeder that prevents squirrels from accessing the feeder.

Adding a catch tray to minimize fallen seed that may attract unwanted critter attention can also help.

Good luck, and let us know if you have further questions, or what ends up working for you!
