Expert Response
Hello, it is not dumb or crazy to water your grass during winter. Newly planted lawns often require winter watering to avoid winter injury (from dessication). But established lawns often don't need to be watered during winter. The need for winter watering increases when we have very dry, windy winters with little snow cover. Was your lawn recently planted? Refer to this fact sheet for specific instructions on winter watering.

Ensure that winter watering is not through an irrigation system or it will need to be cleared out again so the pipes don’t freeze and burst. It is best to hand water with a hose or bucket in the winter months.
However, it would be crazy to fertilize your lawn right now. Despite the name, winterized fertilizers are meant to be applied in late fall. We are currently in winter. The grass is not growing right now, so it cannot use the fertilizer. If you were to apply it now, it would just sit in the soil and possible stress the plant (phytotoxicity).
