sick king palm #890903

Asked December 18, 2024, 10:15 AM EST

This 20 year old king palm is one of my 55 house plants. Even before I brought them inside for the winter, it was showing stress. I've been watering it as I always do so not sure if it could be too much or too little water. Any ideas/suggestions?

Expert Response

Hello Mark.

Thank you for your question.

Both over-watering and under-watering can stress the tree.

For king palms, a good rule of thumb is to let the soil dry about 50% between watering, particularly in cooler months.

Another potential cause for browning leaves is water quality.

King palms are sensitive to salts, chlorine, and fluoride, often found in tap water.

Over time, these elements can build up in the soil and lead to leaf browning.

If you suspect that your water quality might be an issue, consider switching to filtered water or collecting rainwater for a more natural, plant-friendly option.
