Flower/Vine for Trellis #890834

Asked December 16, 2024, 11:09 AM EST

Good Morning - I am constructing a trellis and would like a flowering vine to climb it. The area is sunny and we are in zip code 21084. I would like to see if you have some recommendations for a fast growing type of flower/ vine. Thanks so much.

Expert Response

We have a fairly new web page called Vines for Maryland Gardens that should be helpful. Considerations include how well the soil drains, how much sun the area receives ("full sun" being 6-8 or more hours in summer), if deer browse in the yard, and how large of a structure is available to support the vine, as most grow at least 20 feet high/long if they have something to climb. (If they don't have something to climb, they will become a groundcover or ramble over nearby shrubs and perennials. Most vines by nature are fast growers, putting out several feet of growth per year.) The page lists some native and non-native (but non-invasive) vine species as ideas, but it's not an exhaustive list of possibilities.
