question about wintering potted shrubs #890828
Asked December 16, 2024, 7:53 AM EST
I saw some potted winterberry holly shrubs on sale this weekend (Dec 14-15) that I considered buying but was concerned about their long-term survival. Do you think a potted shrub that hasn’t been protected from the cold so far would be ok at this point, given the recent cold snap and the fact that the pots have been exposed and unprotected? Thanks.

Hi Denyce,
I would not recommend planting shrubs this late in the season because it is preferred to have at least six weeks of mild weather for root growth before freezing temperatures arrive. You should plan to plant shrubs in October at the latest to have them survive the winter.
