Help Identifying Shiny Geranium #890814
Asked December 15, 2024, 3:15 PM EST
The title pretty much covers it. Does this look like shiny geranium or another related geranium like herb Robert? It's growing in my side yard and some local native plant volunteers pointed it out as shiny geranium. If so I imagine I need to try to get rid of it before it seeds in spring. I if that's what it is, how would you suggest I get rid of it?
Thanks!

Expert Response
Yes, Geranium lucidum, common name Shiny Geranium. This is an incredibly invasive plant. It spreads very swiftly. Shiny geranium can thrive in a variety of conditions. It forms dense mats of plants in forests as well as open areas such as lawns and creek edges. Infestations can crowd native species and prevent new native plants from establishing. Use a combination of methods to control noxious weeds. In areas with few weeds, it is important to act quickly before they become harder to control. Make a long-term plan as it often takes several years to get rid of most weeds. Start in the least infested areas first and then move into more heavily infested areas.
Shiny geranium has found its way into Western Oregon and Washington landscapes and has taken the region by storm in as little as 15 years.
