Night time sound #890728

Asked December 11, 2024, 7:25 PM EST

Hi, I heard this the other evening after dark, in my backyard. I couldn't see the animal, even though in playing back the recording, the animal got closer (louder). However, I still couldn't see it. I don't have a strong flashlight. When I went to turn on the flood lights, I heard it no more (didn't get a chance to see it). I heard it again a few days later, around the same time. I am located in Kent, Co. on the eastern shore. I see now, that you don't make provision for uploading of sound files. Please contact me and tell me if there's another way for me to send you the file(s). m4a or mp3

Expert Response

Although some people send us a link to another file-hosting site for file types that Ask Extension can't accept, identifying animals by sound is outside the realm of our expertise. If it was an unusual and/or unsettling bark-like call or wail, it may have been a red fox. If you look up sound clips from red foxes online and that's not what you heard, we recommend that you inquire with wildlife biologists at the MD Department of Natural Resources. An email can be sent to <personal data hidden> (especially if you want to share files) or, if you would like to speak to someone, they have a Wildlife and Heritage Service phone number at<personal data hidden>. The phone line is staffed during regular business hours, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, except state holidays and weekends.

Thank you so much, Miri! I appreciate the additional information. I’m thinking it’s a Fox because I have no better idea, but would like to confirm.

Thanks again!
