DIY Poultry Backyard Chickens #890664

Asked December 09, 2024, 11:54 PM EST

Hi! I was wondering if you had any recommendations for slaughtering backyard chickens. I’m in Portland and would like to get my dad a class/instructions on slaughtering some of our backyard chicken that have aged beyond their laying years. Any direction would help. Thank you!!!

Thanks for your question.

OSU Extension has A Best-Practices Guide to Open-Air Poultry Slaughter that is a good place to start: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/default/files/documents/em9273.pdf.

University of Minnesota has a very detailed publication on home poultry processing - that can be used as a step-by-step guide:
https://extension.umn.edu/small-scale-poultry/home-processing-poultry

OSU Extension sometimes has hands-on poultry processing workshops in September at Small Farm School. We don't have any poultry processing workshops coming up.

I'd recommend calling local processors or feed stores to see if they know of any upcoming classes if he's looking for hands-on experience.
