Brown grass #890653

Asked December 09, 2024, 3:01 PM EST

Hi - My lawn will look nice and green until late fall and then it turns a light shade of brown/tan and looks terrible all winter long. Is there something I can do to prevent this or are there types of grass that go dormant in the winter? Is the only solution to remove all that grass and replant?

Expert Response

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.  Yes, you have described zoysiagrass, and it's normal for it to go dormant and turn brown in the cool months.  There is no way to prevent this except to replace your lawn.  Please see the fact sheets below for further information.  Carol Brown MGV
