Privet Fall leaf problem #890630

Asked December 09, 2024, 9:08 AM EST

I’m a certified arborist pruning a large Privet hedge. Much of the hedge, especially where the leaves are starting to change color, are showing signs of stress on the leaves, appearing like scorch or blight or some kind of insect. Is this a problem that needs to be followed up on or indicates stress of the plants will see during the spring and summer, or is this a problem on my phone to the category of general late season leaf lights that do not need to be addressed? What is the likely cause?

Hi,

These look like they have thrip damage. It looks severe enough that we would recommend either removing them or cutting them back to the ground and letting them regrow. Since privet is considered an invasive plant, perhaps the client would be interested in a replacement.

If they are not willing to remove or replace, they can be treated with a pesticide. UMass Amherst has a recommended list. We would recommend using the least harmful to pollinators. If the client wants it trimmed as a hedge, they may not be producing flowers, but you could recommend that the flowers be pruned off to not pass on harmful effects for visiting insects.
