Stanley plum blooming month #890605

Asked December 07, 2024, 4:35 PM EST

I want to plant a stanley plum tree at 7500 ft elevation southern exposure in full sun. We usually still have snowfall in April and frost in May. I suppose the tree would start blooming somewhen in late April. If I dont loose the bloom to frost would that still leave enough time for the plum to ripen? Thanks.

Expert Response

Hi Andreas,

The Stanley plum will likely ripen in early to mid September in our area. It is later to ripen so there is risk of frost before they ripen but it is also later to bloom which makes it less susceptible to spring frost. Stanely is good option to try in our area but Mount Royal plum might be a little more cold hardy. I also suggest planting the tree on a high point of the property and I would not plant it too close to the house on the south or west side. The heat from the building can encourage the tree to bloom early and make it more likely to be frost damaged.
