Watering  its root zone until the ground freezes and mulching the root zone after the ground freezes are helpful. Hardy lilacs don’t need winter protection and yours has had an entire season so it should have developed a good root system. Protection from rabbits is highly recommended, especially for dwarf shrubs. If bunnies prune it they can ruin the shape and set it back. Bunny pruning will also remove the flower buds.
