Prunning roses - Ask Extension
Could you tell me when is the best time to prune roses in Stark County, Ohio? They are not climbing roses and we planted them this spring.

Hi Emma,
All roses (except for climbers) should be pruned in early spring. The traditional cue for pruning is the blooming of forsythia, so if you have some forsythia shrubs in your neighborhood, they can let you know when it is time. This will probably end up being in late March or early April, when the leaf buds on the roses just start to swell and turn pinkish.
Sometimes folks will also do a summer clean-up after the first flush of blooms, but that is not really pruning - it's more deadheading and shaping to encourage rebloom.
