I found this mossy ball in my garden (November 24), specifically my south facing native plants garden. It's about the size of a tangerine and seems lightweight, although I have only poked it with a stick. It was not attached to anything. Can you help identify it?

This does not look like a plant or fungus to me. It looks very uniform and synthetic, like possibly a pom pom from an article of winter clothing. To further explore this you might try cutting it open.
