Tree planting #890085

Asked November 20, 2024, 12:59 PM EST

I ordered a Poplar and London Plane in August. Due to drought conditions the next couple of months, the nursery did not want to uproot the trees until rain fell, understandably. Is it too late into the fall now to plant a young tree or should I just wait until spring now I’m in the Fairfield area. Thank you.

Expert Response

Hi Katherine,

Generally, fall is the best time of the year to plant trees because the weather provides less stress and promotes root development over the winter.  In Butler County, there is still time until winter arrives, but you probably should plant as soon as you can.  The linked Purdue Extension article provides planting advice:  https://extension.purdue.edu/news/county/putnam/2023/09/fall-tree-planting.html.

For information on your trees:
for the London Plane Tree:  https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/platanus-x-acerifolia/ and https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=285140&isprofile=1&basic=plane%20tree.
for the Poplar:  https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderProfileResults.aspx?basic=poplar - You do not say what type of poplar you bought.

Thank you for your question.
