Raspberry, Summer Bearing, Killarney #890062

Asked November 19, 2024, 5:22 PM EST

I planted bare root Summer Bearing Killarney in May 2023, We have berries that summer on very short canes. This summer we did not get any berries as we may have pruned at the wrong time. The individual canes grew quite tall 6' or so. I have been reading about floricanes and primocanes and now am very confused about what to do with these berries. Please advise.

Here are good instructions. https://www.gardenia.net/plant/rubus-idaeus-killarney
In early April cut the obviously dead canes off at close to the ground. Cut suckers off or the plants will create a patch.
Alternatively, you can dig up the suckers, transplant them someplace else by just burying their roots.
I create a lawnmower wide row between rows of plants with guess, xx.
Be sure you stake your canes as they rise. I use 7 foot high metal garden stakes with wires going cross wise every foot and tie the growing canes with garden twine (twistems cut the canes.)
