Grow tent? #890010

Asked November 18, 2024, 3:59 PM EST

I have a residential garden. Is using a grow tent to start seeds/grow seedlings in late winter, early spring worth the expense? Is there any MSU extension literature regarding this topic? Thank you!

Expert Response

I am not aware of anything specific on grow tents, but they are just a simple growth chamber, like we use routinely in research. Depending on what you get, you can control temperature, humidity and lighting. There are plenty of options for starting seeds during the winter, both indoors and outdoors. A grow tent is one option, but inexpensive seed starting trays with a plastic cover are another option. They can be placed near a bright window, but do better in Michigan (as you can guess!) with supplemental lighting above the trays, once the seeds germinate. Heat mats placed under the trays can aid in germination, as can placing the trays on the top of the refrigerator, where the air is warmer.
