someone pruned all my viburnums and dogwoods yesterday - what can i do to save them this winter? #890004

as i understand it pruning in the fall will cause a dogwood or viburnum to die during winter. woud it help them survive if i covered with burlap? they are not natives. any other ideas? thanks

Expert Response

Pruning in the fall isn’t recommended because pruning stimulates new growth and the trees and shrubs should be going dormant. Even if more than 30% was pruned off the trees should be ok. If they are hardy here they don’t need any protection.
I would say that as much as 50% was pruned off some - for example a red twig and an arctic dogwood pruned straight across as if with a chain saw.  these are shrubs not trees.

Shrubs will survive being cut off at the ground. Give your shrubs a little extra care next year by making sure they get watered once a week and they should make a full recovery.
Burlap wraps are usually for evergreens because they do not go dormant in the winter. They continue to photosynthesize and can dry out.

Wrapping your shrubs in burlap won’t hurt your shrubs as long as the burlap doesn’t get weighed down with too much snow and is so heavy it breaks branches.
