200 year old orchard #889990

Asked November 18, 2024, 11:47 AM EST

We have been trying to take care of a very old mostly apple orchard on the Jennesse Farm 1735. We have owned this for 25 years replacing dead and fallen trees with young fruit trees. We have only sprayed a soap based mixture on the trees Can you recommend an arborist or someone who can guide us. People we had in the past butchered the trees in apparently the wrong season

Hi Paula,

Thank you for contacting the UNH Cooperative Extension with your question about how to care for your mature apple orchard. I have included a link to the NH Arborist Association which includes a list of arborists certified by the association.

I have also included links to fact sheets that discuss how to care for mature apple trees.

You should also have your soil tested to ensure it has the required nutrients so your trees will thrive.

Here is the link for the UNH Soil Testing Services homepage, which has the address to send the sample to, as well as information on best practices for submitting a soil sample and other resources: UNH Soil Testing Services

And here is the link to the submission form specific to home yards and garden: UNH_soil submission form_Home Grounds and Garden
