While this hybrid is purportedly sterile, we do not recommend planting it in case there were to be a reversion (a genetic throwback to one of the parent species, as can happen through mutation) that causes it to produce fertile seed. References about Giant Miscanthus sterility mention that it does not produce viable seed, but that doesn't mean it doesn't produce viable pollen, which might pollinate Miscanthus already growing invasively to further their spread from seed. At least one of the parent species of this hybrid, Miscanthus sinensis, is invasive in our region and already widespread in Maryland, spreading into natural areas from seed and displacing native species.
As an alternative, would you be able to achieve enough privacy from a row of native grasses or shrubs instead? For tall-growing grass species, options for full include Indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans), some varieties of Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), and Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardi). Granted, they do not get as large as Giant Miscanthus could, but in that case, using a taller-growing native shrub may be a better choice instead.
