Is this an unusual bee hive? #889902

See the photos. I have a tulip poplar in my yard that has a beehive that is maybe almost 3 feet long. Will these bees make it through the winter? Will they harm the tree? I need to have some trimming done on the tree because some branches are in danger of falling. When will it be safe to work on the tree without fear of bee attacks?

We don't know if they will be insulated enough for the winter as-is, since generally honey bees nest in enclosed spaces like tree cavities (when not in an actual hive box) where they have protection from the elements. We rarely see them make comb out in the open like this. They will not harm the tree, but you can reach out to a local beekeeper (the linked Maryland State Beekeepers Association page has a list) to see if they are able to come and collect the bees and comb to transfer them into a hive. An arborist having to climb near the nest might be able to smoke them the way that beekeepers can use a smoke puffer to calm the bees they are working with when a hive box is open, but we're not trained beekeepers, so defer to the recommendations of a professional.
