I moved from Burtonsville, Maryland to North Bethesda a couple of years ago. I am living in an apartment building right off of Rockville Pike. The building has a lovely patio and pool area surrounded by trees on one side. These very tall trees are a crow roost (crow condominium). They fly in around 5:15 p.m. and the ruckus they raise is ear shattering. I like to think they are coming in from their day jobs and our discussing their days with their friends and families.
My question is why so many crows in this area? The crows are everywhere in North Bethesda/Rockville. Just curious.
Thanks and thanks for having this place where folks can ask questions.
Montgomery County Maryland
Expert Response
We don't know why they congregate there, but have witnessed the mass aggregations of crows in that area of the county for years now, particularly in autumn and winter. Perhaps they prefer something about the topography of the area combined with the degree of urbanization (providing ample sources of easy food plus opportunities for curiosity or play), but that's just a guess. Someone at the Maryland Ornithological Society might have insight, if you wanted to reach out to them to inquire.
