Fireball tomatoes #889875

Asked November 15, 2024, 11:17 AM EST

We moved to MN 45 years ago and live in Andover. When we moved here we bought a tomato from a local nursry in Anoka. According to the Nursry it was developed by the University of Minnesota for groth on the Anoks Sand Plain. I think they called it "Fireball". It was incredible. Medium fruit about 50 days to maturity and seemed to resist diseases well. We can not find it anywhere for the last 25 years. Can you help me?

Expert Response

Hi Lyle,

Thanks for a most interesting question. A web search indicates “Fireball” was developed in the 1950s by the Harris Seed Company of New York. The University of Minnesota developed “Early Fireball” in the 1960s by irradiating “Fireball” seeds.

Here’s a page about the U of M development:

I couldn’t find “Early Fireball” for sale online, but a web search indicates several seed companies sell “Fireball” seeds. It’s considered an heirloom plant. If you want to grow this tomato, you probably need to buy seeds and start plants yourself.

If you haven’t grown tomatoes from seed before, it’s not difficult. Here’s some information:

I hope this helps! Good luck!
